Updated: The article has been amended to update school zone times/playground zones.
The Lloydminster RCMP is reminding drivers to slow down and keep their eyes peeled as students arrive back to classes.
School zones will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.on school days and playground zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Playground zones are also in effect for 365 days for any school that is kindergarten to Grade 9 and has a playground.
Sergeant Brad Mouland said the detachment will be out patrolling to make sure everyone is driving safely on the first day back.
“When travelling fast, people’s reaction time decreases behind the wheel. Those little decisions that we make behind the wheel are going to make a big, big difference when people are in school zones.”
The reason the speed limit is set at 30km/h is to give drivers and pedestrians more time to react in an unexpected situation.
Mouland is also asking drivers to adhere to the rules when it comes to school buses.
“If you see any school bus with any arms extended with lights flashing, we’re gonna need to have people stay back from that vehicle and just be aware of students and maybe boarding or getting off that vehicle.
Mouland said school zone and school bus-related fines are in the neighbourhood of $500, as well as several demerit points will be taken away.
