Saskatchewan government accepting votes by mail

Residents in Saskatchewan now have the option to vote by mail for the 2020 provincial election.

Following an announcement on Monday, voters can start the process to cast their ballot by registering to receive their voting kit.

Registrations can be done on Elections Saskatchewan’s website or by calling 1-877-958-8683.

People who would like to vote by mail will need to register themselves before October 15.

After registration is complete, voters will receive their voting kit sometime in late September.

Voting kits include a ballot and a postage-paid envelope so voters can mail in their ballot as soon as they are finished.

Voting by mail has been offered in previous elections, often being referred to as absentee voting.

Dr. Michael Boda, Chief Electoral Officer of Saskatchewan, said he acknowledges voting by mail isn’t new, but demand for this method is expected to increase with the current health concerns.

“During these uncertain times, we want to make sure the public knows about this additional option for voting, particularly to those who feel there is a health risk. We’ve hired additional staff to handle the anticipated increase of vote by mail applications,” said Boda.

The Saskatchewan provincial election is expected to be held on October 26.
